Traction Energy Surcharge and Fuel Surcharge – Update No.3

11.08.2022

Dear Business Partner,

Since February of this year, due to generally known circumstances, we were forced to introduce the first traction surcharges for railway and subsequently also the fuel surcharge for combined rail/road transport.

We are constantly monitoring and analyzing the development of the market, but the outlook for the second half of the year is unfortunately not very optimistic either.

The costs that we, as an intermodal transport operator, pay beyond the scope of normal operation, are growing faster and faster. This is due to the increase in energy prices, as well as additional costs associated with train delays.

Due to all these rising costs, as well as the increase in inputs from our subcontractors, which cannot be compensated otherwise, we are forced to raise the amount of the fuel surcharge (FS) in Germany. This change will take place for transports via the Berlin, Leipzig, Munich and Nuremberg terminals with effect from 1 September 2022 (first/last mile delivery date). An overview of the rates of all fuel surcharges can be found here.

We regularly monitor the prices of fuel and traction energy in the entire METRANS railway network. Although they are not stable and there are still local increases, we try to keep them at the current level for you. We hope that you will be delighted with the good news that at this time, i.e. as of 01.09.2022, we are not planning to increase our traction energy surcharge (TES). We are waiting for market development and reports from the individual infrastructure operators.

In addition to the price of energy, the situation is also affected by the – extended – transit time itself, the number of stops on the railway track due to operational problems, where the railway infrastructure does not have the capacity for a properly ordered train.

We would like to thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this challenging period.
