Operational Situation in Northern Europe – Update No. 18

Dear Customers,

We are still dealing with the consequences of January’s adverse weather conditions and several subsequent episodes in various parts of the northern region of our network. The German railway infrastructure is congested, and the Berlin–Hamburg closure on the main corridor is still in place. In addition to this, there are other ongoing restrictions; some may not be directly on our routes, but they negatively affect our operations because they reduce the already insufficient available capacity. Port terminals are also congested, some are experiencing delays, and some are working with strictly fixed numbers of slot manipulations and are not allocating any extra ones. We have to cancel some trains. For northern German ports in general, import connections are booked out weeks in advance, and the volume of imports accumulated at ports is enormous.

Hamburg: HPA still controls entry. Several trains from all services regularly wait to enter the port, which is why we are facing a shortage of wagons and locomotive drivers for imports.

  • DE: Train delays of up to 10 hours due to port terminal delays and lack of resources.
  • PL: Train delays of up to 24 hours due to port terminal delays and train turnaround.

Bremerhaven: Here, too, the infrastructure manager controls the entry by permit. There are delays in both directions due to significant irregularities in the circulation of trains. We do not receive special routes for previously loaded imports.

Wilhelmshaven: Significant train delays in both directions due to yesterday’s all-day strike at the port.

Gdańsk: The port area is experiencing heavy snowfall, resulting in a reduction in slots for trucks, which may cause restrictions on container transport between Gdynia and Gdańsk, and may also slow down train transshipments. Connections in both directions are currently delayed by approximately 4 hours. The capacity of planned slots at the BalticHub terminal has been reduced by 10% for this week. Imports are fully booked until 5 March 2026. It is not yet possible to request a special train.
