Since January 2021, METRANS has been transporting all containers to and from Hamburg, Bremerhaven, and Koper with zero emissions.
Investments in recent years have already included the purchase of environmentally-friendly electric and hybrid locomotives and lightweight wagons. Thus, hybrid locomotives are being increasingly used for the first/last mile, and the wagon fleet consists mainly of the 80-foot lightweight wagons, which were co-developed by METRANS and are already equipped with whisper brakes.
However, at the moment it isn’t possible to transport containers completely without emissions, which is why METRANS has decided to compensate the remaining amount of CO2 as well: In fact, the company is investing in the construction of wind turbines in India – a Gold Standard climate protection
project. This will be confirmed by TÜV Nord.
In the first two months of 2021, this was 11.530 tons of CO2. METRANS takes over the costs for this, but METRANS customers can also participate in this project and receive a certificate with the CO2 savings.
Zero-emission will be offered on all METRANS routes in the future, as well as on the truck/rail pre-carriage and on-carriage from the terminal to the loading point.

METRANS fährt seit Jänner 2021 alle Container von und nach Hamburg, Bremerhaven und Koper mit Zero Emission.
Bei den Investitionen wurden bereits in den vergangenen Jahren umweltschonende Elektro und Hybrid Lokomotiven und Leichtbauwagons angeschafft.So werden für den Verschub vermehrt Hybrid Lokomotiven für die erste / letzte Meile eingesetzt und der Wagonfuhrpark besteht zum Großteil aus den selbst mitentwickelten 80 Fuß Leichtbauwaggons, die mit auch bereits mit Flüsterbremsen ausgestattet sind.
Ganz ohne Emission geht es derzeit jedoch noch nicht, deshalb hat sich METRANS entschlossen auch die restliche CO2 Menge zu kompensieren: Und zwar wird in die Errichtung von Windkraftanlagen in Indien – ein Gold Standard Klimaschutzprojekt – investiert. Dies wird vom TÜV
Nord bestätigt.
In den ersten 2 Monaten 2021 waren das 11,530 Tonnen CO2. Die METRANS übernimmt die Kosten dafür, jedoch haben sich METRANS Kunden ebenfalls an diesem Projekt beteiligt und erhalten dafür ein Zertifikat mit der CO2 Ersparnis.
Zero Emission soll zukünftig auf allen METRANS Relationen angeboten werden, so wie auch der LKW/Bahn Vor- und Nachlauf vom Terminal zur Ladestelle.
